  • Please describe how the Pedal Ahead e-bike is benefiting your lifestyle?

Not many changes in my lifestyle other than constantly being on the lookout for roads with good bike lanes and new places to ride.  I recently started taking the electric bike on the bus to expand my range.  I am looking forward to the completion of the trolley expansion to UCSD as there are quite a few places to ride up there.

  • Are you using the e-bike differently or for more types of rides than you had initially thought?

I am using it to do short trips where I normally would have walked, e.g. picking up a library book or getting a couple of items at the supermarket.  I think I would use it a lot more if I wasn't concerned about it being stolen or vandalized when I'm not nearby.

  • Are you using the Pedal Ahead e-bike to commute to work? If so how many miles is your commute?

Yes about 5-6 miles each way so 10-12 total for the commute to work and back.

  • How many car trips are you saving using the e-bike?

Normally about 3 to 4 per week, but recently have been riding daily to my sister's house to help her with her broken ankle.

  • What is the typical length of your ride (in miles)?

    15

  • Please describe your most fun e-bike ride or adventure?

I recently rode the Bayshore Bike Trail halfway to Palomar St, turned east and rode about seven miles to my sister's home, then back to the trail to finish in Coronado and the water taxi back to downtown (44 miles total)

  • Can you comment on how the Pedal Ahead experience has improved your health and lifestyle?

It is a lot more exercise than I thought it would be.  Even at the third power level it gets me panting on a steep hill, but at the same time it is enough of a boost to allow me to ride anywhere without worrying about the hills.  I live in Hillcrest and if I head out in almost any direction I need to travel up one of the hills to get home (e.g. Laurel, Bachman, or 5th Ave).  I consider this extra required effort to be a bonus as it forces me to have periods of higher intensity exercise.

  • Are there any things that have surprised you about riding an electric bicycle? Please describe.

  • Any suggestion on improving the Pedal Ahead experience?

One problem I have is finding new bike rides.  There are only so many routes I can take from my home.  Also, the number of low-traffic roads or roads with wide bike lanes in San Diego is limited.  I notice that I will use the same sub-route to get between different areas (e.g. From my home I will always take Robinson east to Florida north to Howard east to 35th north to get to Adams Ave near Uptown Bikes). It would be nice to have a list of safe or scenic bike route "legs" that Pedal Ahead members submit that can be assembled into a route. Another example: From Adams Ave near the bike shop I sometimes ride east to the Rt 15 bike lane and into Mission Valley.  From there I have two routes west to take me either to Old Town or along the SD River bike trail to Pacific Highway, then toward either Ocean Beach or Mission Bay
